Signs of Heat Stroke
Friends and Neighbors,
Our pets handle heat differently than we do. While we have sweat glands throughout our bodies to help control our temperature, dogs and cats have only a limited number of these glands. It’s up to us as good pet parents to help our furry friends stay cool during these hot Chicago summers!
What can Cause Heat Stroke?
Temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit
Note that cooler temperatures can also cause heat stroke, however you should take extra safety measures once the temperature rises above 80!
Inadequate ventilation
Lack of shade
Lack of access to water
Excessive exercise
Signs of Heat Stroke in Cats:
*similar to dogs, but more subtle
Seeking a cooler spot
Fast panting
Delirium
Pacing
Muscle tremors
Bleeding from the nose
Dizziness
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Red gums
Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs:
Labored breathing
Collapse
Dullness
Dizziness
Diarrhea
Drooling
Purple tongue
Red gums
Vomiting
High heart rate
“Some things to keep in mind when exercising your pet in the warmer months include their breed, age, and body condition. Brachycephalic breeds like bulldogs, French bulldogs, and pugs are less efficient at regulating their body temperature via panting, and are therefore more prone to heatstroke. Young, athletic dogs may be more driven to play and run than others, and may not know their own limits when it's hot out. Older dogs may also have less endurance and be less efficient at cooling themselves. Dogs that are overweight or obese are also more prone to developing heat stroke, so take the weight loss plans into the kitchen during the warmer months!” - Dr. Kate Sapato, BLVD Vet Logan Square Medical Director
If you notice your pet exhibiting any signs of heat stroke, get them to the nearest emergency veterinarian immediately. Until you actually arrive at the ER, you can spray cool (not freezing,) water to them.
We hope you find these tips useful and that they help keep your pets cool this summer! Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or to schedule an appointment. We’re always here for you and your pets!
Sincerely,
The BLVD Team
