How to Get Your Cat to Drink Water

It’s common for kitties to be uninterested in drinking water. Even though they may not require as much water intake as a dog, it’s still important for their health! We’ve compiled a list of ways you can encourage your cat to drink water.

Keep Water and Litter Separate:

Experiment with different locations for the water bowl. Ensure the bowl is in a quiet, stress-free area away from noisy appliances or high-traffic areas.

Add Wet Food:

Incorporate wet food into your cat's diet to increase their water intake. Wet food has about 80% moisture content, reducing the need for additional water.

Use Running Water:

Cats are naturally inclined to drink moving water since it’s less likely to harbor bacteria. Consider using a water fountain. You can also try using tap water from your bathroom or kitchen sink!

Keep the Bowl Clean:

Cats have highly sensitive noses and will avoid dirty water. Keep their water bowl clean and always filled with fresh water.

Mix with Broth:

Enhance the flavor of your cat's water with a splash of low-sodium chicken broth, tuna juice, or clam juice. You can also freeze the broth into ice cubes to keep the water cool and flavorful. Ensure the broth is free of salt, onion, and garlic, which are toxic to cats. Contact us before changing your cat’s diet so we can ensure a smooth transition!

Fill the Bowl to the Top:

This prevents their whiskers from dipping into the water which can be uncomfortable for them.

Use Different Water Bowls:

Try raised bowls that allow your cat to drink without craning their neck. This can be especially helpful for older cats.

Spread Bowls Throughout the House:

Place multiple water bowls or fountains around your home to make it easier for your cat to find water. Having lots of options can be helpful for your kitty!

If you notice your cat is not drinking water at all, please contact us or your nearest emergency veterinarian immediately. We hope you find these tips useful and that they help keep your cats happy and healthy.

Sincerely,
