Marijuana - toxic to both dogs and cats.
Like many substances that are otherwise safe for people, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance in marijuana, can be dangerous for our pets. Weight and size of the pet, with the quantity of ingested cannabinoids, plays a large role in which symptoms occur. Unfortunately, pets metabolize cannabinoids much slower than humans which causes them to feel the effects of THC for anywhere up to 24 hours (or longer), depending on how much they consumed. Check out our marijuana toxicity article for more details!
If you believe your pet has ingested a toxic plant, seek veterinary attention right away and do not wait for symptoms to appear; we can often induce vomiting and prevent toxicity.
Also, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is a resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435. A consultation fee may apply.
