Preparing for Veterinary Visits
Friends and Neighbors,
Veterinary visits, whether for vaccines, illnesses, or even just nail trims, can cause stress for our pets due to new, unfamiliar, and potentially uncomfortable environments/smells/people.
This fear and anxiety can prevent the pet from receiving the degree of close examination and treatment they need due to their fight or flight responses. Our hope is to help ease this experience and reduce future stress over time for our little ones.
Before Leaving
Play pet-friendly light/quiet classical music in the home or in the car.
Use pheromone-sprayed coats, blankets and towels to put either inside their carrier or on the seat so they can get comfy.
Start this process at least 1-2 hours prior to leaving (except medications - give these as instructed).
Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals
Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals (PVPs) are medications prescribed by a veterinarian to help reduce anxiety and stress in pets. To be given as directed by a veterinarian ahead of vet visits to lower anxiety (caused by anticipation or deviation from your routines).
Most effective when administered before your pet’s appointment. Your veterinarian will specify exactly when your pet should receive their Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals.
Synthetic Pheromones
Sprays - Spray items 30 minutes to one hour before the pet will smell them.
Room diffusers - You can restrict the pet to a smaller room for ease of access and locating the pet. Do this several hours before you plan to leave.
Cats - Feliway
Dogs - Thunderease
Returning Home
Stress may persist after returning home, so it’s important to help pets acclimate successfully. Use Feliway or Thunderease and play low, calming music to block outside noise. Pets may need space and time before reintroduction to the other pets/people in the home due to unfamiliar smells and possible reactivity.
