Parvo Season Is Here
How To Protect Your Pup
Friends and Neighbors,
As the weather warms up here in Chicago, we often see a rise in cases of Canine Parvovirus, commonly known as Parvo. This highly contagious viral illness poses a significant threat to dogs, particularly puppies. We’ve put together some basic information about Parvo and what you need to know to keep your pup healthy!
What is Parvo?
Parvo is an extremely contagious viral disease that affects dogs and can be fatal if not treated early, especially to puppies. It spreads through direct contact with an infected dog or through contact with a contaminated object, such as food bowls, leashes, and even the ground. The disease most often presents in dogs between six and 20 weeks old, but older animals can also be affected.
What are the Symptoms?
Severe, bloody diarrhea
Vomiting
Fever
Lethargy
Loss of appetite
Rapid weight loss
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to seek veterinary care immediately. Early treatment can significantly improve the chances of recovery.
How Do I Prevent My Dog From Getting Parvo?
Prevention is key, especially for us city dwellers. Generally, puppies younger than 16 weeks should receive their first dose between 6 and 8 weeks of age, then boosters every 3-4 weeks. Dogs older than 16 weeks with no previous vaccination or an unknown history should receive two doses 2-4 weeks apart.
Why Vaccinate Now?
As the seasons change and we start bringing our pups outdoors more frequently, the chance of contagion increases. Whether it’s taking a walk through the park or enjoying dinner on the patio - prevention is required to keep your pup safe from Parvo. The good news is, Parvo vaccines are relatively inexpensive and can save you and your dog a lot of trouble in the future! Vaccination not only protects your dog but also helps curb the spread of the virus within the community.
By staying informed and proactive, you can help keep not only your own pup safe from Parvo, but the other dogs in your community! We hope you find these tips helpful. Contact us to schedule a visit if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
