Are Ice Cubes Safe for Dogs to Eat?

Vet tech giving a miniature aussie a treat.

Friends and Neighbors,

The short of it, ice cubes are safe for dogs to eat! Ice cubes are actually great for dogs during the hot weather or when they need some DIY enrichment. But, before you give your pup the entire tray, there are a few things to make note of!

Benefits of Ice Cubes

There are plenty of benefits of ice cubes for your pups! Some of those are:

  • Teething puppy

  • Encourage drinking water

  • Free, DIY Enrichment

  • Cool off during a hot day

  • Frozen peanut butter or pumpkin puree in ice cube tray

  • Slow down a fast drinker

Just like anything we give our dogs, we recommend that you keep an eye on them while they’re eating ice cubes. Too much can become harmful to them.

Potential Harms of Ice Cubes

  • Do not give ice cubes to dogs with weak teeth (geriatric dogs, for example.)

  • Consider the size of your dog’s jaw before giving them the ice cube.

  • Don’t give ice cubes to dogs who are already overheated. In this case, give them room temperature water and keep them cool indoors.

  • Don’t give ice cubes to a dog who already has excessive water intake. Contact us to determine how much water your dog should be drinking each day. It varies depending on size, age and breed.

Overall, ice cubes are just fine (even beneficial!) to give to your dog. Like with most things in life, be careful of over-doing it. Contact us if you have any concerns about your dog’s water intake.

We hope you find these tips useful and that they help keep your pets happy and healthy. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or to schedule a visit. We’re always here for you and your pets!

Sincerely,

The BLVD Team
